Buying in Spain? What to check before you pay a deposit

A short guide for British buyers. Use these questions when you speak to your adviser about a property.

1. Gather what you have

   Bring the property address or listing, any draft reservation agreement and any plans or property records you have been given.

2. Ask what needs checking

   Ask your adviser to look at ownership, possible charges, differences between records and the documentation for any extensions or alterations.

3. Discuss the terms and costs

   Ask what the deposit commits you to, when it may be refundable and which taxes, fees and other costs you should budget for.

4. Share any deadlines

   Tell us if you have been asked to sign or transfer money by a specific date, so we can discuss what can be reviewed in the time available.
